basic facilities in order

Introduction

The CEF (Collective Educational Facilities) program team is tasked with clarifying the facilities needed in teaching spaces at the University of Twente (UT) and ensuring that the basics are in order. The aim of the 'Basis op orde' project is to set up COV spaces so that students can attend education and, if necessary, participate online. This takes into account the educational vision of the university.
The project has a clear focus on 'on campus' education, where both students and faculty are physically present. There is also a focus on streaming and recording, which allows lecturers to teach to online students and possibly students present.

An important aspect of the project is ensuring that the lecturer can be easily followed in the teaching space, when streaming and recording lectures. The lecturer's presentation and explanations on the touch screen must be easily visible. In addition, the equipment must be easy for lecturers to operate and direct technical support is available. The quality of recordings should be such that students can hear the lecturer clearly and see the presentation and the touch screen clearly.

Basic Facilities in educational rooms

The project has already produced several results, including a report by André de Boer on audiovisual facilities in UT lecture halls and a report by consulting firm Turner on integral approaches to teaching facilities. It has also produced the 'Teaching Delivery Modes' document that provides an overview of the various teaching modes and associated teaching activities.

Next step

As a first step, the project established the 'Basics in Order,' where all halls are furnished according to the same basic facilities. This includes teacher visibility and intelligibility, visibility of presentation and explanation, easy operation of equipment and availability of technical support. The project team has gathered input from various stakeholders and forums, and has incorporated comments from the UCOW.

The project is also in the process of defining the functionalities and use of a video recording tool/video platform, including the availability and rights structure of recorded lectures. A tender for the video platform has been completed; Yuja will be commissioned in the fall.
For future education, basic facilities will be updated and supplemented based on developments such as flexible learning, personalized learning and life-long learning. The project will review and update the document annually to stay up-to-date.

The project is currently in a phase where the basic facilities are being implemented in all teaching spaces and work is underway to define functionalities and the video platform. The project team continues to work with various stakeholders to ensure that the facilities in teaching spaces meet the needs of faculty and students.
