Open Access and Emerald

You may have heard that as of this moment in 2020, there is no additional financial support for Open Access publications neither from UT or BMS. Fortunately, with several funders (e.g. NWO) you can request budget for expected OA publications before the start of your research project. And of course there are the national deals between Dutch Universities (VSNU) and several publishers. For an overview, don’t forget to check out the UT Journal Browser before submitting your paper.

One such publisher, but with a slightly different approach, is Emerald. They work with a set amount of Open Access vouchers between all Dutch universities. For Emerald journals that we also subscribe to, UT researchers can use such a voucher to publish OA for free. Upon acceptance of your paper, you will be approached by the editor about this (alternatively, see their illustrated workflow). It is also possible to use such a voucher to publish for free on Emerald Open Research, a new platform for innovative research with open peer-review. At the moment of writing, about 39 Emerald vouchers are still available. Try it while you can!
