Project PERFECT - Purchasing Education and Research for European Competence Transfer (2015-2018)

Overall project objective  -  The aim was to develop an empirically validated harmonised European curriculum at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels in purchasing and supply management (PSM) and lay the foundations for establishing international study programmes for higher education in PSM at participating universities and beyond.

Available materials - the project website provides links to the White Papers and the project results. Educators can benefit from the outline of a PSM curriculum, whereas learners can take a freely available online course, and professionals can benchmark their skill levels in a tool.

Research methods - To discover which skills and competencies to incorporate into a PSM curriculum, project PERFECT followed an integrated approach. Firstly, the project mapped the PSM skills landscape by performing a literature review and analysing university courses and 300 European PSM job advertisements. Based on a conceptual skills model developed by research from various sources, the project conducted 46 expert interviews with representatives of multiple purchasing functions and job roles from 16 companies analysing best practice examples from corporations in numerous industries and of various sizes and types of companies. The insights gained from this output were validated by a survey with European firms with more than 500 completed questionnaires to identify those skills and competencies that account for successful PSM activities.

Evaluation - The evaluation and dissemination of project results were conducted with national and international PSM associations, such as IPSERA (International Purchasing and Supply Education and Research Association) and IFPSM (International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management), and regional representatives and associations. The German National Agency DAAD awarded Project PERFECT as an example for other projects.

Project partners: TU Dortmund University, Germany (lead); Hochschule Mainz, Germany; University of Twente, Netherlands; Staffordshire University, United Kingdom; and Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland.

PROJECT PERSIST - PURCHASING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH syndicate for Industry 4.0 skills TRANSFER (2019-2022)

Overall project objective  -  The aim was to analyse the role of Purchasing and Supply Management (PSM)  in the era of I4.0 (machine-to-machine communication). This underlying subject is developing quickly, and higher education needs to prepare for the role of new content and new forms of education. New competencies will be required, and the need for new, interactive, student-centred teaching approaches is subsequent. The project members see the opportunity to benefit from the technology changes to support future education. A tailored education system will help to develop future competencies. The aim and innovation of the PERSIST project lie in: a) identifying those skills which are likely to prevail and those which are newly added to the profile of a European purchaser to develop an I4.0 PSM Skill framework and b) developing a module-based course for higher education to teach these skills and c) to develop new, gamification and playful interaction oriented didactical elements for purpose student-centred teaching approach, including a gamified MOOC (massive open online course).

Available materials - the project website provides links to the White Papers and the project results. The freely available online course can be found on this website.
