In this first tutorial, Georgios Katsaros from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria explains the concept of holes. Starting from the analogy between holes and air bubbles in sparkling water and continuing with the explanation of the energy dispersion relation, he comes to the existence of two types of holes: heavy holes and light holes. This brings him further to the concept of the so-called spin-orbit interaction, a key property used in the TOPSQUAD project. This will be the subject of a future tutorial.
