Study tour XUV 2022

All good things come to an end and so did XUV’s study tour last week. We’ve had an amazing week. Everyone showed true ambition and interest throughout the whole tour and consumed and exchanged as much knowledge as possible. The objective of this week was to broaden our knowledge of optics fabrication, metrology and advanced light sources as well as to learn to know each other better

A short recap of last week

Tuesday November 8th started with a visit to SCHOTT AG in Mainz, Germany. They’ve shown us some interesting research about glass and Zerodur and gave us a fascinating tour of their R&D and factory.

Thanks Yakup Gönüllü and Bernd Hoppe for the interesting visit at corporate R&D where we saw laser processing of glass and the coating department. Also a big thanks to Florian Kanal and Eveline Rudigier for the visit at the Schott main plant and Zerodur department.

Thursday November 10th we visited PTB , the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, the National Metrology Institute of Germany in Berlin Adlershof. We were welcomed by Christian Laubis and Stefanie Handreck. The group got a great tour of PTB’s MLS facility and the BESSY II electron storage ring.

The afternoon was spent in the Berliner Unterwerken – with a dystopian visit of an decommissioned atomic bunker.

Friday November 9th we concluded our tour with a visit to DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in Hamburg, with a tour of PETRA III, the old HERA collider and FLASH (Free Electron Laser). We finished our study tour with some really interesting pitches for new ideas/experiments from the XUV group.

A great thanks to SCHOTT, PTB and DESY who gave us a warm welcome and well prepared visits!
