The Applied Physics programme at the University of Twente (UT) is receiving international attention this week at the APS Global Physics Summit, held simultaneously with the March meeting in the United States. This global conference brings together approximately 14,000 leading physicists, universities, and industry partners to discuss the latest scientific breakthroughs and their societal impact.
A Global Stage for the University of Twente
At the conference, a new video, produced in collaboration with APS, will have its world premiere. This professional video beautifully showcases the UT as a leading research and educational institution. It highlights how the Applied Physics programme bridges fundamental research with real-world applications that address societal and technological challenges.
Sissi de Beer, programme director of Applied Physics (AP), was approached by APS with the request to feature the programme and its faculty because they were impressed by several aspects of the programme. They had seen that UT has been known as a top-ranked programme for years, that AP had won the Dutch Education Premium in 2023, and that the programme offers interesting extra-curricular activities, such as ‘Physics of Amusement Parks’ and ‘Physics of Snow & Ice’. They also noted that UT has many top scientists and impactful publications are regularly written by professors. Every year, APS highlights several physics programmes and because of these achievements and activities, UT was chosen.
From Chip Technology to climate issues: applied impact
The video offers a glimpse into how the programme positions itself within various international top domains:
- Applied Nanophotonics: integrated photonics, including chip technologies.
- Quantum Physics: pioneering research within the quantum world and finding out what this could start to mean for society.
- Physics of Fluids: Fundamental and applied studies of fluid dynamics, from wind farm optimisation to iceberg melting.
- Materials Science: Development of advanced materials for the challenges of tomorrow.
International recognition for UT
UT’s presentation at the APS Summit places the university among a select group of institutions with global influence. Sissi: "With this video, we show that we are a vibrant international community, where our students and scientists enjoy working with each other and with industry to develop knowledge and technologies for a sustainable future".
