NWO-TTW GRANT FOR NOVEL TECHNOLOGY FOR FILTERING ORGANIC MICRO-POLLUTANTS

Great example of cooperation to solve the growing problem of micro-pollutants in surface water

Researchers from the Membrane Science and Technology cluster will develop a new technology to filter organic micro-pollutants (OMPs) from water. The project is a collaboration with Wageningen University & Research, Saxion, KWR, STOWA, NXFiltration, Nijhuis Water, Oasen, and four water boards, and receives a financial contribution from NWO-TTW.

The basis of the technology is a newly developed membrane by the MST cluster, that removes OMPS efficiently. The OMPs are removed from the wastewater after the regular water treatment and immediately biodegraded. If the new process is successful, it will lead to a new efficient technology that is able to almost completely remove OMPs from our wastewater.

The project will receive a 1 million euro fund from NWO, which will be supplemented with funds from the three companies, the water boards Rijn en IJssel, Vechtstromen, Aa en Maas, and Vallei en Veluwe. The water boards will be involved in a pilot program where a first design will be tested in practice.
