The programme

General information

The Research Day is dedicated to showcasing and connecting research within the TechMed community, with a special focus on young researchers. It offers PhD candidates and early-career researchers the opportunity to present their work internally through oral or poster presentations. In doing so, the event provides a platform to share scientific progress, receive feedback, and engage with colleagues across disciplines.

Abstract books

Curious about the abstracts from the participating researchers within the Scientific programme? You can download them via the links below, listed in alphabetical order by last name.

08:45 - 09:15 | Check-in desk open

Participants are welcome to check in at the registration desk, which is open until 10:00 (programme starts at 09:15). Upon arrival, coffee, tea, and (flavoured) water are available to start the day in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. These refreshments remain available throughout the entire day, ensuring continuous access to drinks during the programme.

09:15 - 10:00  |  Plenary programme - TL 2275

09:15 | Welcome by Prof.dr. Maroeska Rovers

The Research Day will be opened by Prof. Dr. Maroeska Rovers, Scientific Director of the TechMed Centre. In her opening remarks, she will reflect on the role of TechMed in advancing healthcare innovation and outline the ambitions for the day. The welcome sets the stage for collaboration, inspiration, and shared direction across the TechMed community.

09:20 - 10:00 | Opening: Depends on how you see it

This interactive opening highlights the transformative power of the arts in health care and health professions education. It raises fundamental questions about how you see the world and others in it, and how others may see you and the work you do.  During the lecture, you will engage in exercises that trigger your imagination and perhaps challenge your perspective: that depends on how you see it…

12:15 - 13:15 | Lunch break

During the lunch break, participants are invited to enjoy a variety of food and take time to connect informally with colleagues across disciplines. Coffee, tea, and (flavoured) water are available throughout the entire day, ensuring continuous opportunities for refreshment and interaction. The lunch provides a moment to recharge and further exchange ideas in an open and informal setting.

13:15 - 14:30 | Interactive programme

These two sessions will focus on advancing the vision of the Hospital of the Future within the TechMed ecosystem.

The Health Innovation Hackathon is an open, interactive session, designed for junior researchers, in which participants collaboratively explore what healthcare in 2040 could look like. Through a structured, hands-on approach, attendees will develop future scenarios and translate these into concrete ideas and interventions that contribute to a radically redesigned healthcare system.

In parallel, the Way of Working Health Domain session is an invitation-only session for Principal Investigators. This session focuses on the strategic dimension of the Hospital of the Future: how a more harmonised way of working across institutes can strengthen impact, improve alignment, and position the University of Twente within national and international developments.

TL 2275 | Health Innovation Hackathon

For whom: junior researchers

The Health Innovation Hackathon invites participants to actively contribute to one of the most urgent challenges in healthcare: how to redesign the system to remain accessible, high-quality, and sustainable in the face of rapidly growing workforce shortages.

Building on the vision of the Hospital of the Future, this 75-minute interactive session engages participants in small-group collaboration to explore what healthcare in 2040 could and should look like. Central to this ambition is a radical transformation of the care ecosystem, aiming to operate with up to ten times fewer personnel across the care chain, while maintaining or improving quality of care. Using the Responsible Futuring method developed by the DesignLab, participants will envision desirable future scenarios and translate these into realistic and actionable interventions. Guided by seven key pillars—including hybrid care, AI-driven decision-making, robotics, preventive health ecosystems, and data-driven operations—each group will define future care models and identify concrete solutions that can help realise this transformation.

The session is designed to stimulate bold thinking, challenge existing assumptions, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will not only reflect on long-term system change, but also define tangible steps and innovations that can be developed in the coming years. Outcomes from the hackathon will contribute to shaping the ongoing vision of the Hospital of the Future and help position the TechMed Centre and the University of Twente as key drivers of meaningful healthcare innovation.

TL 1133 | Way of Working Health Domain

For whom: directors of education, assistant-, associate- and full-professors

During the Research Day on 16 April, this interactive session at the TechMed Centre focuses on strengthening the way of working within the Health domain in the context of the “Hospital of the Future” ambition. Following a short update on the current status of this vision, the session will transition into a structured dialogue with Principal Investigators (PIs). The central aim is to explore how a more harmonised approach across institutes can accelerate impact, reinforce the University of Twente’s strategic position, and contribute to national and international developments in healthcare innovation.

Through three focused discussion rounds, participants will:

  • Reflect on emerging developments and strategic opportunities for leadership.
  • Identify how stronger alignment between research, education, infrastructure, and implementation can be achieved;
  • Define concrete priorities, partnerships, and actions needed to move from vision to implementation.

The session is designed to actively engage PIs in shaping future directions, defining key themes and centres of expertise, and contributing to the development of an adaptive healthcare workforce. The outcomes will inform next steps in positioning TechMed and its partners towards realising transformative healthcare innovations.
