15:00 - 16:00 SOCIAL SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

Ir. Erwin Medendorp is Integral Safety Manager at the University of Twente. In the area of securing Integral Safety, much has now been laid down in systems and procedures at the University of Twente, in his opinion. However, he wonders whether this is sufficient to prevent socially unsafe work situations as well.

Just like the University of Twente, many organizations have arranged for the safeguarding of Integral Safety in their organization and have often recorded it in detail in systems and procedures. As a rule, people have also been appointed to provide assistance (confidential advisor, ombudsman, etc.). Yet all too often this turns out to be an insufficient safeguard to prevent socially unsafe situations such as sexual harassment, intimidating behavior by colleagues or failure to comply with generally applicable ethical standards. Recently this became painfully clear in a TV documentary in which John de Mol thought he had everything structurally well organized within his organization. Practice turned out to be a lot more recalcitrant.

Prof. Ellen Giebels of the University of Twente, has made efforts in recent years to make social safety in the workplace negotiable. Among other things, she initiated the theater performance "Mindlab." Mindlab inspires and challenges you to think and talk - with each other - about what is important the daily work, your career and your life - inside and outside the university.

During the workshop "Social Safety in the Workplace," Erwin and Ellen will enter into a dialogue with each other and also with those present: what are important conditions to also secure social safety in the workplace?
