Novel-T facilitates in all phases: from the emergence of the business case to market entry.

If you are a researcher with an interesting research result, a ground-breaking technology or a smart innovation, Novel-T can help you to bring your innovative idea or research to market. We offer you an inspiring workshop about the phases from researcher to a successful startup. We show what support the University of Twente Knowledge & Technology Transfer Office offers to start with your business. In addition, an entrepreneurial researcher from this region will share his story, experiences and tips about starting a business from research. After the workshop, you can find our experts on the information market where we would like to talk to you!

  • "What I learned from my depression" by Erik Kemp

Erik Kemp is a MSc. Cyber Security student at the UT. Next to being actively involved in the UT student community, he has also dealt with a severe depression. After sharing his story publicly last May (featured in UToday), P-NUT has invited Erik to share his experiences at our PhD day.

“A depression should not be confused with feeling a little off sometimes. My depression taught me valuable lessons, but I really hope other people don’t have to go though the same process. During this workshop, I hope to give you an insight in what a depression can do with someone, and how (I think) we could prevent it from happening. For PhD students who have been in a depression or have seen it happening to colleagues: I really hope you will join the workshop. If you’re willing to share some of your experiences, we might find similarities and differences, through which we can learn from each other.“

  • "PhDs: Slaves of science? Precarious working conditions of PhDs vs possibilities to do something about it" by Promovendi Netwerk Nederland (PNN) and Academic Union (VAWO) (starts at 14:15)

The PhD Candidates Network of the Netherlands (PNN) is the national organisation for PhD candidates in the Netherlands. Our primary goal is to represent the interests and improve the working conditions of all PhD candidates doing research in the Netherlands. PNN consists of a national network of PhD Councils from the Dutch universities, medical centres, and research institutions.

What options do you have for developing yourself during your PhD trajectory? What can you do when your promotor asks you to supervise yet another student on top of those others? How does your type of PhD contract influence your work?

It is important that you are aware of you rights as a PhD candidate. Together with the Academic Union, the PhD candidates Network Netherlands (PNN) will therefore provide you in this workshop with information, answer to your questions, and advice about PhD issues. After this workshop your PhD-life will be perhaps a bit more fun and easier, so don’t hesitate and join!

  • “Networking: Building sustainable relations” by AcademicTransfer

Do you ever think about your career step after your PhD? Are you aware of the importance to invest in your network? Do you need tips & tricks on how to start or expand your network? what about your personal branding? Find this out during this workshop.

Parallel Sessions II

Starts at 15:45 hours and ends at 16:30 hours.

  • "How to be a happy and successful PhD!" by Julia Wijnmaalen

Julia Wijnmaalen is the author of The PhD Survival Guide (link). She loved doing a PhD. A process she stepped into driven by curiosity and with a smile of amazement on her face. Julia earned her PhD-tour-guide-stripes as she successfully managed to get a PhD whilst maneuvering between different research institutes, countries and life events. Are you doing a PhD? Are you thinking about starting one?

A PhD is nothing like any other project; it is very very personal. Doing a PhD often feels like an emotional rollercoaster. In this workshop Julia will share with you some insights into the world of science and its possible stressors, like the relationship with your supervisors or publication pressure. Being aware of these stressors, and how you can mitigate them, increases your effectiveness, succes and ensures your happiness!

  • "Why happiness matters: The importance of psychological well-being and development as we move into the future" by The Collective Unconscious

The world is getting better, but it's leaving people behind. We've created incredible tools to connect with each other, but individuals feel more lonely than ever. Why the contradiction? TCU believes that as a society, we do not place enough importance on the psychological well-being and development of the people around us. This is especially obvious at the university level - where a student can graduate with honors, without anyone ever asking if he/she is happy. We also believe that how a person feels is just as important as what they create. And that a university degree cannot be considered a success if it leaves a student riddled with anxiety and self-doubt. Defining happiness, and why it is important, will be key if we hope to create a better tomorrow.

Austin Piedmont - Austin Piedmont is the founder of TCU (The Collective Unconscious) and an advocate for student well-being and development. He believes that the mental health of students should be a priority at every university, so he created TCU as a way to bring people together who are interested in making this happen.

Selene Illner - Selene Illner is a certified Laughter Yoga teacher. Since 2017, she has been regularly giving Laughter Yoga workshops and is currently writing her Master thesis about this topic. Her goal is to share her positive experiences in Laughter Yoga with others.

    The Collective Unconscious (TCU)

A group of individuals - free thinkers, creators, activists, students, professionals - we all come from different places and with different backgrounds and expertise. But what unites us is a drive to create a better tomorrow and the realization that we share a collective responsibility to make it happen. Our core mission is something that every member of TCU takes seriously and believes is possible - to accept responsibility for the psychological well-being and development of all world citizens and to create viable solutions to achieve this. Leading by example, and encouraging others to follow, we believe that it is possible to catalyze effective and positive change at any level - family, community, state, country, world - by focusing on the psychological well-being and development of individuals.

  • "From discovering a passion to developing better materials for sustainable energy conversion" by Monica Morales-Masis (Hosted by the Female Faculty Network Twente, FFNT)

Organizers

P-NUT passes the borders of faculties, departments and even universities by bringing doctoral candidates with different backgrounds together to share their experiences and help each other to grow and become more efficient in their work. Our main objectives are to bring people who share similar interests together in both a professional and informal way, to inform them on the important aspects that might affect or benefit their careers as scientists and share and defend the rights of the PhDs at the UT. These objectives define the three main goals of P-NUT: connect, inform and represent the doctoral candidates of the University of Twente.

The organizing chairs consist of R.R. Cruz Martinez (P-NUT President 2019-2020) and R.H. Bemthuis (P-NUT Treasurer 2019-2020).
