Keynote

  • Keynote by Sanne Feenstra: Advancing Diversity in Academia

In recent years, there has been growing awareness and advocacy for increasing representation of underrepresented groups, such as ethnic minorities and women, in academia. Despite this growing attention, such diversity is still lacking, especially in higher-level positions and in specific scientific fields. In this talk, dr. Sanne Feenstra, from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will share latest scientific insight into (the lack of) diversity in academia. In particular, Sanne’s talk will focus on the role of stereotypes, experiences of the impostor phenomenon, and the role of allyship in suppressing and fostering diversity in academia.

Dr. Sanne Feenstra is an Assistant Professor in Organizational Psychology at VU Amsterdam and content director of the Amsterdam Leadership Lab. She completed her PhD thesis (entitled Power in Organizational Life: An investigation of how stable and unstable power affect important organizational leadership outcomes) in 2020 at the University of Groningen.

Her research focuses on leadership, power, and the impostor phenomenon. Sanne has published her research in journals such as Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and Applied Psychology: An International Review and her research is regularly quoted in the press and various media outlets.

Free lunch!

For the afternoon sessions, we move to DesignLab where we close the gap in your stomach. We also offer vegan options! Enjoy a free meal sponsored by the DE&I grant. This is also the perfect opportunity to interact with fellow PhD candidates.

Alternative: You also have the opportunity to visit the information market (see below) or get a tour of DesignLab!

Workshops

Obtain new skills with our parallel interactive workshops. You have the opportunity to choose two from the following list!

  • Alumni Network: How to develop your network!

In this interactive workshop Joe Laufer from the UT Alumni Office offers networking tips, tricks & insights customized for PhD candidates. You will learn about optimizing a LinkedIn profile, building professional networks, and how to leverage alumni for your current PhD research and future career ambitions. We will talk about the strategies to make LinkedIn work for you! If you wish to participate in this workshop, we recommend you to bring a laptop!

Participants should already have created a basic Linkedin profile beforehand and are expected to bring laptops for the hands-on parts of the activity.

Joe Laufer enjoys pioneering new engagement and outreach practices both at the University of Twente and in collaboration with other Dutch and European colleagues, tailored specifically to the distinct needs and characteristics of our alumni, external stakeholders, and institutions.

  • Bridging the impact gap: from science to startup - Novel-T

After working hard on your research, the last thing you want is for it to start gathering dust. Your research and your ideas have to go out into the world so it can make an impact on society. But how do you do that?

In this workshop, we look at the different possibilities of how your research can create a societal impact. We’ll dive into the opportunities to license your research, so businesses can use your research results to make an impact. Or maybe you want to take on the challenge yourself: how can you find out whether there’s an entrepreneur in you? And how can you turn your ideas into a startup? This workshop teaches you how to bridge the gap between science and society: from IP to startup and everything in between.

Hi there, I'm Albert-Jan de Croes. Every day I support colleagues like yourself in creating a societal and commercial impact with their research. From Novel-T, the Knowledge Transfer Office of the UT, we create new companies (spin-offs) to combat society's greatest challenges. It is my job to help you secure the required funding to launch your spin-off and grow it. Did you know that most spin-off founders started as PhD (candidates)? I'm eager to tell you more about the possibilities and inspiring examples that have come before you. See you on the 23rd!

  • Neurodiversity in the Workplace

In this interactive session we'll deep dive into what neurodiversity is, why it matters in teamwork and how you as a team member can explore its potential with your colleagues. The workshop is open to anybody, no matter of your knowledge about neurodiversity.

*Neurodiversity - a term that's used to describe differences in the way people's brains work (neurotypical vs neurodivergent people).

Anita Kalmane-Boot is a neurodiversity advocate and passionate about spreading the word, starting discussions and breaking stigma about autism and other neurodiversity conditions. Her close family and friends include people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia and bipolar disorder, and even more neurodiversity traits are visible in the teams she has worked with.

When not talking about neurodiversity, she’s helping software development teams improve their agile processes and ways of working.

  • (Under-)representation of Women's Health in Research, Medical Investment and Innovation

A Case Study on Diagnostic Delay in Cancer in Women.

When it comes to health and care, we have more knowledge about men than women. In research and practice, the male body is often considered the norm, even though we understand that many diseases and conditions manifest differently in women than in men. Consequently, women do not receive an equivalent quality of care. Diagnoses may be missed or delayed, there is less knowledge about women-specific conditions, and women experience side effects from medications twice as often. At the University of Twente, an expanding group of researchers has united in the Technology for Women's Health research pillar to enhance care for women across the life cycle. In this workshop, we will guide you through the ins and outs of women's health / sex and gender in research, providing contemporary examples from the UT. And a case study of one of the studies being conducted within the Women's Health group on diagnostic delay in cancer in women

Nikki van de Veerdonk is the Program Manager of the Technology for Women's Health research pillar at the University of Twente. This pillar is part of the Technologies for Personalised Medicine program managed by the TechMed Centre, with the goal connect all researchers at the University of Twente working on women’s health and gender medicine related topics. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree on Public Administration at the Radboud University, and her Master’s degree on Applied Ethics at the Linköping University in Sweden. She has worked for multiple companies focusing on menstrual health, sexual and reproductive health and women's health across the life cycle.

Liza Hoveling is an epidemiologist and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Twente. Additionally, she holds an external position at the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation (IKNL). Currently, Liza's research activities revolve around the study of women's health and the investigation of diagnostic delays in cancer among women. Her focus includes analyzing patient behaviors and the practices of healthcare professionals in this context. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences at the University of Twente and her Master's degree in Nutrition and Health, specializing in Epidemiology and Public Health, at the Wageningen University. In 2022, Liza successfully completed her Ph.D. at the University Medical Center Groningen. She earned her Ph.D. with a thesis titled "Unraveling socioeconomic health inequalities - targets for preventing metabolic syndrome and major depressive disorder."

  • Expat Centre - Design for transition

Finding a job after promotion and so bridging the gap between academia and the industry can be a challenge. What kind of companies are based in the area, which organisations could assist, what do you have to take into account with regards to permits and how to deal with cultural differences? Participate in this workshop, get properly informed and prepare yourself to take the next step.

Michelle Ekkelkamp has been manager of the Expat Center for over a decade and is now focussing on the project Happy to be in Twente. The goal is to encourage companies to work with internationals and make the Twente area a better place to live for people originating from outside the country. Using this background and her own expat experience, she can share her knowledge on both practical and cultural matters.

  • DOX - Stage Fight

Are you not interested in any of the workshops above? You can already participate in the stage fight! This workshop is offered in the interactive sessions. More information below!

interactive sessions

To end the day, we plan for more interaction on a physical level. Discover your boundaries regarding touch in a stage fight or participate in a Mindfulness workshop.

  • DOX - Stage Fight

A hug, a pat on the back, a firm handshake…….. or an inappropriate gesture? It is very natural to touch each other, however our behavior is often received very differently than intended. In our 'stage fighting' workshop you will be guided to create a real stunt scene like in a move. Timing, eye contact, cooperation, safety, and consent are paramount. As participant you learn to trust each other through our movement techniques, you explore different types of touch, and you discuss needs and boundaries. With humor and vulnerability, we help you to mind the gap between fighting and embracing.
