We are organizing a learning session/workshop exploring neuro-inclusive design and shared sensemaking. Before the main evening, we'll host small interactive workshops where you can try out our neuro-inclusive design method. Then, on Thursday evening, a talk will be held on neuro-inclusive ways of shared sensemaking and communication: How can we interact socially in ways that lets everyone ‘be and become’ (in the words of philosopher Hanne de Jaegher). We’ll share some of our findings so far, possibly with a short exercise to illustrate the process, followed by an open discussion.
The session focuses on how neurodiverse perspectives can reshape interactive technologies to bridge divides rather than deepen them. This is increasingly important now that homogeneous groups of people become more and more isolated in silo’s (bubbles), an effect strengthened by social media and other technologies. We instead wish to investigate how neuro-diverse perspectives can affect the development of interactive technologies and how these perspectives can help create technologies that can actually help bring diverse minds together, help people make sense together, tune into themselves and one another, accept and acknowledge the interactional needs of the other, without losing your own autonomy and safe-guarding your own needs in the process. In particular in schools, from elementary school up to higher education, this is essential for making sure every person can participate, learn and grow in an educational community, but also at the workplace.
Our research is very fundamental at this point into how people interact socially with their bodies in the same space, how technology can mediate in that space to enable participatory sensemaking. By including the voices and lived experiences of neuro-diverse minds in the design process, researchers can break down normative cultural barriers and ableist assumptions and drive meaningful innovation that encourages the celebration of neurodiversity. We wish to discuss your experiences and ideas on this with you.
What do you need to be and become with others, and at the same time let others be and become?
