Pre-master Humanitarian Engineering: Programme structure

What is a Pre-Master's?

A pre-master’s is a transfer programme designed to prepare students with a bachelor’s degree from a University of Applied Sciences or a research university for entry into a master’s programme. It applies to students who are not directly admissible but whose prior degree is sufficiently related to their intended master’s programme. Once you have successfully completed the pre-master’s and obtained all required credits, you are eligible to start your master’s programme.  Learn more about pre-master's in general

  • Advanced Technology
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Applied Physics
  • Biomedical Technology
  • Business Information Technology
  • Chemical Science & Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Creative Technology
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Design Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering  & Management
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Technical Computer Science
  • Technical Medicine

If your programme is not listed above, you may need to complete a pre-master’s.

University of Applied Sciences (Dutch HBO)

As a bachelor’s student from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO), you are required to complete a pre-master’s programme before entering a master’s programme.

The pre-master’s programme is tailored, and for students with an engineering background, it typically focuses on strengthening academic skills and foundational knowledge in mathematics and statistics.

Transfer Minor (doorstroom minor)

As a bachelor’s student in a technical or engineering programme at a University of Applied Sciences, you may complete part or all of your pre-master’s through a so-called transfer minor while still finishing your bachelor’s degree. In essence, the transfer minor is equivalent to the pre-master’s programme, with the key distinction that it is completed during the bachelor’s phase rather than afterwards. This provides a valuable opportunity to save both time and costs, as you remain covered by your bachelor’s tuition fees.

Dutch Research University (Dutch WO)

If you have completed, or will soon complete, a bachelor’s degree at a Dutch research university (WO) but are not directly admissible to the MSc in Humanitarian Engineering due to identified knowledge gaps, you will be required to complete a pre-master’s programme.

The pre-master’s programme is tailored to your individual background, as there is no standard structure. Its content and workload (measured in ECs) depend on your prior education and the specific areas where additional knowledge is needed. For students with a background in social sciences or technology, the programme typically focuses on strengthening foundational knowledge in mathematics and statistics.

International degree

If you have completed, or will soon complete, a bachelor’s degree obtained abroad, you may be required to complete a pre-master’s programme to address any identified knowledge gaps.

Programme Requirements and Guidelines

The pre-master’s programme is designed to both address any gaps in your previous knowledge and help you determine if studying at a research university is the right fit for you. The following rules apply:

  • The pre-master’s programme must be successfully completed within one year.
  • There is a limited number of resits available per course.
  • If you do not successfully complete the pre-master’s, you will not be eligible to start a pre-master’s in another programme at the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente.

Options and Costs
We offer flexibility in how you complete your pre-master’s, with options to study both online and on campus (primarily in quartiles 1 and 2). The cost of the pre-master’s varies based on your individual situation, as it depends on the duration and study load. A flat fee per EC applies.
