Smart Mobility Hubs as Game Changers in Transport
Can mobility hubs, on-street locations offering a variety of shared mobility options such as electric bicycles and cars, contribute to inclusive and sustainable urban mobility? This will be examined in the 3 year project SmartHubs which has just been awarded. The project is one of 15 international projects from the Urban Accessibility and Connectivity programme funded 23 national funding agencies from 16 countries in Europe. The SmartHubs project is coordinated by Prof. Karst Geurs from the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology, at the University of Twente, with a budget of 2 million Euro.
SmartHubs will examine if mobility hubs can be a game changer towards inclusive and sustainable urban mobility. Will mobility hubs improve cycling and public transport and reduce car use. SmartHubs will take a people-first approach and test novel participatory and impact assessment tools including technologies such as augmented reality technologies combining the real and online world.
The research will be conducted in Living Labs in the Rotterdam-the Hague metropolitan region, Brussels, Munich, Vienna and Istanbul.

Kunnen mobiliteitshubs bijdragen aan duurzame en inclusieve mobiliteit in steden? Mobiliteitshubs zijn locaties op straat waar deelfietsen, deelauto’s en andere vormen van deelmobiliteit worden aangeboden. Dit wordt onderzocht in het 3-jarige SmartHubs project dat recent is gehonoreerd. Het project is een van 15 internationale projecten uit het onderzoeksprogramma ‘Urban Accessibility and Connectivity’ dat wordt gefinancieerd door 23 nationale wetenschapsfinancierders uit 16 landen in Europa. Het SmartHubs project wordt gecoordineerd door prof Karst Geurs, Department of Civil Engineering van de Universiteit Twente.
SmartHubs gaat samen met bewoners, bedrijven en overheden onderzoeken of mobiliteitshubs een ‘game changer’ voor duurzame mobiliteit kunnen zijn. De mens staat centraal, niet de technologie. Gaan mobiliteitshubs helpen om fiets en openbaar vervoer te stimuleren en autogebruik te laten afnemen? Om dit te onderzoeken gaat SmartHubs innovatieve instrumenten voor co-creatie en participatie ontwikkelen, onder meer augmented reality technologie waarbij de virtuele wereld en werkelijkheid worden gecombineerd. Het onderzoek gaat plaats vinden in de metropoolregio Rotterdam - Den Haag, Brussel, München, Wenen en Istanbul.
