Background and objectives
For the prediction of morphological impacts of large-scale sand mining on the shoreface and on the near-shore (coast) a thorough understanding and quantification of the controlling sand transport processes are required. Morphological simulation models are generally provided with sediment transport formulas, in which wave-induced sediment transport processes are not (sufficiently) accounted for. The present project is aimed at modelling of these processes in the ripple regime (moderate wave conditions) and is a follow-up of previous Ph.D. research projects, which were focussed at the sheet-flow regime (storm conditions). The objective is to improve our understanding of sediment transport processes in the ripple regime and to develop reliable, validated models for quantitative sediment transport predictions on the basis of new and existing data, both from the field and the laboratory. The basic element in the research is formed by new laboratory experiments in full-scale conditions in the large oscillating water tunnels of WL|Delft Hydraulics and the University of Aberdeen.
