Analysing the intertwined aspects of carbon, biodiversity, and water offsets: towards integrated climate and environmental policy

Type: PhD Research

Duration: October 2023 – October 2027

Keywords: Carbon offsetting, Biodiversity Offsetting, Water Offsetting, Offsetting Policy, Social-Ecological Systems

Funding of the project: This PhD project is part of the sector plan for earth and environmental sciences

Offsetting, i.e. the compensation of environmental impacts, has become an increasingly prominent instrument in climate and environmental policy covering carbon, biodiversity, and more recently, water related impacts. In the discussions to date, these three types of offsetting have largely been considered in isolation. This has led to a gap in the understanding of the complex social-ecological interactions that constitute and emerge from offsetting projects. In addition, approaches that pool different offsetting types are becoming increasingly relevant in practice, but have scarcely been discussed in scientific literature.

The objective of this PhD is to explore, identify, and analyse the interactions between carbon, biodiversity, and water offsets to develop multidimensional policy recommendations by applying a social-ecological systems perspective.
