This project investigates the trade-offs between road safety and accessibility.  A majority of transport policies aim to improve accessibility and road safety but they fail a balanced treatment of accessibility and road safety concerns. The findings of this study may inform policies in which different externalities are optimized, so that accessibility and road safety can both be improved along with other important issues such as public health and the environment.

This research will comprise spatial analysis the impacts of built environment characteristics on road safety and accessibility. Also, we examine how people trade-off between road safety and accessibility in their transport-related choices. Thereafter, as an attempt to better incorporate road safety in accessibility analysis we develop accessibility models which incorporating road safety effects.

This PhD project is conducted in collaboration with the Dutch Road Safety Institute (SWOV - Instituut voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Verkeersveiligheid).
