Albert van den Berg, UT Distinguished Professor of Biomedical and Environmental Sensor Systems (BIOS) and one of the scientific directors of UT’s MESA+ Institute, has been elected ‘corresponding member’ of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). This organization represents the interests of technology education, research and industry at the highest level, in Switzerland.
SATW, the Schweizerische Akademie der Technischen Wissenschaften, established in Zürich, counts about 360 members and corresponding members from the world of engineering and technology. This non-profit organization advises government and politics about innovation and technology and also develops activities for making young people choose for a career in technology. SATW, in turn, is a member of the Swiss Academies of Science.
Switzerland has world leading technical universities, like ETH in Zürich and EPFL in Lausanne. Albert van den Berg himself worked at a Swiss institute for some years after he finished his PhD in Twente. This was the Institut de Microtechnique in Neuchâtel, currently part of EPFL.
Albert van den Berg (1957) (read more about him at his featured scientist page) is also a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Royal Netherlands Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). He was awarded two prestigious Dutch research prizes: the Spinoza Prize and the Simon Stevin Award. Van den Berg won two 'Advanced Grants' of the European Research Council. He initiated collaboration on a national and international level, in the fields of 'lab-on-a-chip' and 'organ-on-a-chip' technology.
