Decentralized energy market: the role of the grid operator

Master assignment in cooperation with Alliander

What function should the grid operator have in facilitating local energy systems? Is this restricted to a technical function or does it include a business aspect? And what should the ‘standard product’ of the energy supplier look like? What would be the relationship between market parties, end users and the grid operator in this situation?

Starting from September, Alliander will explore similar questions with the market as part of a co-creation process. This includes the question: is it logical that only Tennet has to provide balance of the grid? Currently, regional grid operators are not responsible for the balance of their own grid. With the shift to a decentralized energy system, this may no longer hold and can lead to strange situations.
