Internship at Alliander

Internship at alLiander

Alliander is a grid operator in one third of The Netherlands and has the challenging role of facilitating the energy transition in which we move away from fossil fuels to a sustainable sources of energy. The energy transition requires Alliander to invest in upgrading its electricity grid in order to accommodate solar/wind generation and the electrification of mobility, heating, and processes in industry. To prevent congestion and to prevent unnecessary investments, Alliander experiments with innovative tariffs for business customers with flexible demand for power during off-peak hours, called ‘non-firm capacity’. Non-firm capacity will enable a reward mechanism for customers to reduce their impact on the electricity grid.

Your impact

Alliander is looking for a student to assess different algorithms to fairly distribute the available power during off peak hours amongst flexible customers. This is important as it allows multiple customers to reduce their impact within the same part of the grid. The scope of this assignment is a working concept for an algorithm which satisfies the given boundaries. Furthermore, Alliander requires an assessment regarding unwanted incentives (gaming) of the proposed algorithm.
