Recently, we have experienced unacceptable incidents involving aggression and violence towards students and staff on and around our campus. We strongly condemn such behaviour, that appears to specifically target international members of our community. It does not reflect the values of our open and international community, and is inexcusable.
Our campus is not a closed “bubble” and is as such open to people from outside our community. Unfortunately, it also means that some of those external visitors do not share our values. We are committed to ensuring that our campus remains a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, and we will support those affected by such events. We are in close contact with the police on these incidents, who are monitoring the events and the alleged perpetrators, and are also on extra alert ourselves.
To help protect yourself and others, please keep the following tips in mind:
- Stick to well-lit areas: avoid using dark, narrow streets or shortcuts. Walk or cycle on main paths with proper lighting and visibility. Avoid distractions like headphones or your phone when walking alone.
- If you experience an incident or witness unacceptable behaviour, call Campus Security: add the emergency number +31 53 489 2222 to the contacts in your phone so you can quickly contact them in urgent situations.
- Report suspicious activity: if you see something concerning, don’t hesitate to call Campus Security (+31 53 489 2222) immediately.
- Trust your instincts: if something doesn’t feel right, take action to ensure your safety, such as changing your route or finding a safe place.
- If you have had such an experience, talk about it! We strongly encourage you to file a police report and we will support you in this process. Campus security and our integral safety manager maintain direct contact with the local police officer and the relevant authorities.
There is no place on our campus for xenophobic behaviour and let alone violence. Let’s work together to maintain a safe and secure campus for everyone.
Stay safe!
