From 1 December 2023, Monique Tabak has been appointed as a professor in the chair: 'Personalised eHealth Technology for Complex Chronic Conditions' at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.
Tabak develops and researches eHealth technology for individuals with one or multiple complex chronic conditions, such as COPD and asthma. Her research focuses on personalized health: how can eHealth technology contribute to 'tailor-made care in daily life with the patient at the centre? Additionally, she teaches in the Biomedical Technology, Technical Medicine, and Health Sciences programs at the University of Twente. She particularly focuses on remote patient monitoring (including sensors) to create a comprehensive picture of a person in daily life. Subsequently, she investigates how to develop personalized coaching and decision support using this data in the triangle: healthcare professional-patient-technology (shared-decision support technology). These technologies aim to contribute to personalized and proactive care on one hand, and self-management and patient empowerment on the other. Currently, she leads a large-scale European research and innovation project (RE-SAMPLE) in which a multidisciplinary consortium employs remote patient monitoring and AI to predict and proactively treat and coach the progression of COPD with comorbidity using personalized eHealth technology.
As a professor, Tabak is affiliated with the TechMed Centre, where she coordinates interdisciplinary research in the field of eHealth technology. The research is conducted at the Department of Biomedical Signals and Systems in close collaboration with other departments of the different faculties at the university. Also, there is an intensive collaboration within a strong ecosystem that consists of (inter)national partners from business, healthcare, authorities and other scientific institutes.
