Trauma surgeon Han Hegeman appointed as professor at the University of Twente

As of 1 October 2023, Han Hegeman has been appointed as a professor for the chair 'Remote monitoring in treatment and rehabilitation of trauma patients' at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

This chair is made possible in collaboration with ZGT, where Hegeman works as a trauma surgeon. In 2008, he was one of the founders of the Center for Geriatric Traumatology (CvGT), now a top clinical function of ZGT. In his role, he focuses on improving the treatment of elderly individuals with a broken hip. Hegeman is instrumental in the treatment model of CvGT; a combination of multidisciplinary coordination within and outside the walls of ZGT, scientific research, and innovation. The aim is to guide patients with a broken hip through an optimal transmural care path, resulting in fewer complications, preservation of function, and a lower mortality rate.

As a professor, Hegeman is responsible for leading research focused on technological innovations and their application in the practice of trauma surgery. This research is conducted in close collaboration with ZGT, the Biomedical Signals and Systems Department of the University of Twente (TechMed Centre), and various nursing homes such as TriviumMeulenbeltZorg, ZorgAccent, and Carintreggeland.
