Abstract

Hyperspectral analysis of cellular ultrastructure in electron microscopy

Microscopy is a key technique to visualize and understand biology. Electron microscopy (EM) enables the investigation of cellular ultrastructure at nanometer resolution. Recent digitization and automation of EM allows the capture of large cellular sections at very high resolution. Analysis, however, is hampered by the greyscale nature of electron images and their large data volume, often requiring laborious manual annotation. This talk will be about a novel framework of unsupervised  extraction of biomolecular categories in samples using large-scale hyperspectral energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) imaging. This imaging technique and the corresponding analysis allow the visualization and isolation of subcellular features with minimal manual intervention.
