How do algorithms shape our daily lives, and how can we shape these technologies ourselves?
Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant promise but a part of everyday life. From the way we learn and work to how we deal with health, climate and safety, algorithms increasingly influence our choices, opportunities and responsibilities. The question is no longer if AI has an impact, but how we can ensure that these technologies truly serve people and society.
With Algorithms for All, the University of Twente opens up that conversation. This series of sessions brings together researchers, students, professionals and anyone with an interest in the role of AI in society, around five timely themes: education, climate, work, health and safety.
The initiative was developed by Kristy Claassen, PhD candidate in Philosophy of Technology, and Udipta Boro, PhD candidate in Urban Safety and AI, in collaboration with the Digital Society Institute (DSI).
This session: SAfety and AI
In cities and public spaces, AI is increasingly used to monitor, predict and prevent risks. These technologies promise greater safety and efficiency, yet they also influence how we move, behave and interact with one another.
This closing session reflects on what safety means in an algorithmic society. Together, we discuss how to design intelligent systems that not only protect, but also respect people — ensuring that technology strengthens, rather than undermines, public trust.
Speakers
- Host: Maarten van Steen, Professor of Computer Science and Scientific Director of the Digital Society Institute
- Early-career tech talk: Udipta Boro, PhD Candidate in Urban Safety and AI
What to expect
Each session creates space for exchange and dialogue. Short contributions by researchers and guest speakers from professional practice provide the starting point for an open discussion on the social, ethical and technological dimensions of AI. In doing so, the series reflects the essence of the University of Twente’s mission: High Tech Human Touch.
- Inspiring talks by UT researchers and guest speakers from a range of disciplines
- Reflection on the opportunities, risks and values of AI in society
- An open meeting place for dialogue, connection and collaboration
Expect an inspiring and informal atmosphere, with a free vegan kroket sandwich for everyone attending.

Why attend
Algorithms for All is open to everyone interested in the societal dimensions of technology and curious about the role of AI in our lives. Whether you are a researcher, student, professional or simply interested, the series offers an opportunity to exchange ideas, ask questions and discover new perspectives together.
An open invitation to join the conversation - about technology, society, and the future we want to shape together. Because only together can we discover how technology can truly serve people and society.
