IEA Choppin Award for dissertation Dr. Annemiek Punter

Dr. Annemiek Punter has received the Bruce H. Choppin Memorial Award for her dissertation. This annual award was established in 1985 and recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertations that employ empirical research methods and use of IEA data. IEA stands for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement and has been responsible for international large-scale comparative studies in education for more than 60 years. It is the third time that a PhD student of the University of Twente has received this prestigious award.

Annemiek Punter started her PhD research in 2015. Her dissertation, Improving the modelling of response variation in international large-scale assessments, presents five studies that contribute to research in the field of education by exploring cognitive and contextual data of IEA studies. The topics addressed are computer and information literacy, parental involvement and reading literacy, and language demand in testing mathematics. Each chapter also explores methods for identifying and handling potential differential item functioning (DIF) in the framework of item response theory.

Annemiek completed her dissertation at the end of 2018 at the Department of Research Methodology, Measurement, and Data Analysis (OMD) of the Faculty of BMS. Her supervisors were prof. Cees Glas (OMD), prof. Theo Eggen (Cito) and Dr. Martina Meelissen (OMD). Annemiek is currently pursuing her research interests as an educational researcher at the Dutch Inspectorate, with a focus on national large-scale assessments.
