BSc in Public Administration (Twente University)

Title of Ph.D. thesis: Modeling importance assessment processes in non-routine decision problems.

Scientific interests

1: Decision processes. Decision makers judge alternatives by their relevant attributes. How do these actors assess the importance of attributes? Can importance assessment processes be improved so that their quality or acceptance increases? How do designers make importance assessments, and do experienced designers differ from their inexperienced colleagues in this respect?

2: The aerospace industry. How are aircraft used by organizations for achieving their goals? Technical attributes of aircraft and organizational and policy variables interact with each other. Issues of special interest are aircraft design and acquisition choices, strategic alliances between airlines and between manufacturers, and government aerospace policy.

3: Methodology of research and problem solving. Hans teaches on these subjects for several postgraduate institutions.

Professional interests

1: Unmanned cargo aircraft. Hans is chairman of the Platform Unmanned Cargo Aircraft (PUCA), an international organization that aims to facilitate the development of unmanned cargo aircraft. These aircraft have various advantages over manned aircraft, including the potential to transport cargo loads that are too small to be transported efficiently by manned aircraft, and their productivity (no pilot scheduling constraints). This should make it possible to unlock the economic potential of regions that are as yet excluded from the worldwide air cargo transport network. PUCA-website: www.platformuca.org.

2: Long-term developments in aviation. This can range from the competitive positions of network carriers versus low-cost airlines to the development and acquisition of combat aircraft and other technologies. Hans publishes an analysis of major aviation developments in the Dutch monthly trade publication ‘Piloot & Vliegtuig’. Of special interest are the decision and importance assessment processes involved.
