Building Bridges: cross border resource pooling and Strengthening Healthcare

Hospitals near the border in Euregio face the challenge of providing high-quality care with limited resources. These range from lower capacity in sparsely populated regions and resulting staff shortages to the lack of intensive care beds in the Netherlands or medication shortages in Germany. These issues arise despite both countries having the highest healthcare expenditures and the highest percentage of doctors in the EU, indicating that they are not in a financially sustainable situation. Furthermore, public health (and its associated crises) does not stop at borders.

This is where cross-border resource pooling (lack of coordination, bureaucracy, and cultural differences) becomes crucial. This involves a range of tools and strategies to coordinate and share resources among healthcare institutions. The goal is to narrow gaps in resource and service provision while minimizing waste through resource duplication and unnecessary transportation costs. Through resource pooling, hospitals in the German-Dutch border region can quickly access the necessary resources in case of sudden emergencies without needing to stockpile them. For patients, this means shorter distances and faster access to specialized care.

BRIDGE identifies opportunities for coordinated cross-border resource pooling, develops and implements a digital platform to facilitate this, and provides input for relevant policy decisions. Are you curious about what this project can offer you and what role your hospital can play in it? Come to the Kickoff event on April 11th and discover the possibilities. Join us in revolutionizing healthcare delivery across borders, creating resilient and sustainable healthcare systems for everyone.

Workshop: Dashboard to pool resources
The power of the dashboard lies in its ability to contain and distil diverse information types so that users can have a broad overview of a situation in real-time. To be effective, dashboards must contain the needed information, and the information must be provided in a way that feels intuitive. Considering do's, don'ts and best practices we will work together to design a powerful dashboard for resource pooling in our health region.
