The heart of the TechMed Centre
The TechMed Simulation Centre offers a clinically realistic and flexible environment where students, healthcare professionals, researchers and companies come together. It is a safe space for learning, testing innovations, and engaging with future end-users. Education, research and innovation converge here, enabling cross-pollination between different disciplines.
Education
At the Simulation Centre, students and professionals can practise their medical and technical knowledge and skills in a safe, realistic setting. Our dedicated simulation rooms, consultation spaces and intensive care units are equipped with advanced simulators and trained simulated patients who provide immediate feedback. Integrated audio and video systems, linked to a portfolio platform, support in-depth debriefing and reflection. The Hybrid Operating Room, physiology lab and MRI facilities also support various forms of education — from understanding technical principles and measuring on human subjects to full scenario-based training.
Research
Our facilities allow for testing innovations at various stages: from early design validation to clinical research involving human subjects. Thanks to rigorous testing and maintenance protocols, the data generated is of high quality and suitable for medical publications and MDR certification. All medical data is stored securely and in compliance with legal standards. In collaboration with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Sciences (NES) ethics committee, we ensure that every study is ethically sound and professionally conducted. Our team supports researchers with technical assistance and equipment operation, ensuring experiments run smoothly and efficiently.
Collaboration
Entrepreneurs in the MedTech Twente ecosystem are welcome to use the Simulation Centre to integrate innovations with clinical equipment, conduct user testing, or train end-users. Tailor-made facility sharing and non-disclosure agreements ensure that innovation testing is well supported and securely managed.
Facilities
The TechMed Simulation Centre includes a wide range of clinical and educational spaces equipped with advanced technology, as well as various conference and meeting rooms. Learn more on our facility-specific pages:

- Intensive care units
- Medical simulators
- Operating rooms
- Consultation rooms for skills training
We also develop realistic anatomical and functional phantoms for diverse applications, ranging from photoacoustics and ultrasound to MRI. These enable standardised testing and validation of new technologies. Additionally, we manage the entire workflow for handling biological tissue, allowing for highly realistic experiments.
Example Projects
- CASH-3V – In collaboration with the Dutch Society for Vascular Surgery (NVvV), the TechMed Academy provides training and examination for residents in vascular surgery. By combining the NVvV’s curricula with our educational expertise, we assess future specialists using a wide range of simulated clinical environments, custom-made test objects and state-of-the-art simulators.
- SBMS – All medical residents involved in acute care across the region receive training in our simulated intensive care units, where they are prepared to manage medical emergencies in a structured and systematic manner.
- Magnetic Robots for Blood Clot Removal – In partnership with Radboud University Medical Center, we are testing a novel technology involving wireless magnetic robots designed to remove blood clots. These tests, conducted in our hybrid operating room using the Siemens Artis Pheno angiography system, involve biological tissue not suitable for consumption.
