Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is the perception of sound in absence of any external sources. Tinnitus sounds are believed to be generated somewhere in the brain and there is currently no cure for it. In my research, I am trying to find differences in cortical activity between people with tinnitus (often accompanied with hearing loss), people with hearing loss (to exclude that any differences found are caused by hearing loss and not tinnitus) and a control group. The cortical activity is measured using EEG and by making use of auditory evoked potentials (brainresponses to sound stimuli). The goal of my research is determining whether neuromodulation can be used in suppression of tinnitus.
