Chill out: the frelaxing powers of cold.
Your mum probably told you to put on a warm coat on chilly days, because otherwise you would catch a cold. She was wrong! Exposure to low temperatures seems to be very healthy for a human being. Iceman Wim Hof discovered that cold can strengthen and relax both mind and body. Dr. Cheryl de Boer (ITC) and Jet van der Werf MSc (ET) are both certified Wim Hof Method trainers and explain the beneficial effects of breathing techniques, cold showers and ice baths.
Veritas Forum: Doet hoop leven?
Kun je nog hopen in deze tijd van oorlog en andere ellende? En wat is hoop eigenlijk? Voor christenen is hoop gerelateerd aan het besef dat er een God is. Maar wat als je niet in een god gelooft? Hoe floreer je dan? En is dat gemakkelijker of juist veel moeilijker? Veritas-Forum laat een gelovige en een niet-gelovige debatteren met elkaar en het publiek. Dr. Gert-Jan Segers was voorzitter van de Tweede Kamerfractie van de ChristenUnie. Dr. Marijke Schotanus-Dijkstra is wetenschapper bij Psychologie, Gezondheid en Technologie (BMS, UT); zij doet onderzoek naar hoe je kunt floreren in het leven.
Climate action
Most people agree that action must be taken to reduce the effects of climate change. But what is the most effective way to set things in motion? Is blocking a highway or gluing yourself to a famous piece of art the right way? Or is establishing an academic climate centre more effective? Discussion with: prof.dr.ir. Albert van den Berg, dr. Cheryl de Boer (founders of the UT Climate Centre) and dr. Ernst-Jan Kuiper (climate scientist and Extinction Rebellion activist).

Sundays without cars on the highway. Instead people, happy to picnic on the tarmac. In the 1970s using petrol was prohibited a few times as Europa had a severe energy problem because of a shortage of oil. Some countries like France and Denmark responded effectively and transformed their energy sectors into nuclear and wind energy. Why did they succeed? Is there a relation between the political system and the success of an energy transition? Fundamental questions in our times of climate crisis. Science Cafe Enschede: Oppenheimer
Robert Oppenheimer was de briljante wetenschapper en organisator achter het ultrageheime Manhattan Project waarmee de VS de eerste atoombom ontwikkelde. Oppenheimer was een complexe persoonlijkheid, die naast zijn bijdragen aan de natuurkunde ook een brede culturele belangstelling had voor religie, filosofie en literatuur. Dr. Frans Kingma (fysicus en literator) en drs. Machiel Kleemans (fysicus en historicus) vertellen over de veelzijdigheid van deze legendarische natuurkundige. Dit jaar publiceerden zij een boek over Oppenheimer: Splinters van de zon.

Dr. Peter Kraus (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) explains the Nobel Prize for Physics 2023 won by Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier for their experiments, who have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules. The laureates have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy. Read more.
Prof. dr. Daniël Vanmaekelbergh (Utrecht University) elucidates the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2023 won by Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov for their discovery and development of quantum dots, nanoparticles so tiny that their size determines their properties. These smallest components of nanotechnology now spread their light from televisions and LED lamps, and can also guide surgeons when they remove tumour tissue, among many other things. Read more.

Promising pianists: Rio Ueyama
At the last edition of the International Piano Competition for Young Musicians in Enschede most young pianists were remarkably talented. Two prize winners will perform this evening and tell about their life as a rising star. Renowned pianist and teacher Michail Markov will give a public masterclass. Rio Ueyama is a Japanese, born in Poland. He started learning to play the piano at the age of 4. He will play music of Chopin and Prokofjev. Alexander Jansen (Netherlands) just finished high school and is an outstanding talent who will perform pieces by Chopin, Debussy and Liszt.

SCIENCE CAFE ENSCHEDE: VAN KOE NAAR SOJABOON
De Twentse boer Tom Grobben MSc gooide samen met zijn broer het roer om: hun weilanden werden akkers voor sojabonen. Onder de naam De Nieuwe Melkboer produceren zij plantaardige sojamelk. Bij hen zie je de eiwittransitie van dierlijke naar plantaardige eiwitten dus in de praktijk. Die verandering bleek niet altijd gemakkelijk. Ir. Chris de Visser van de Wageningen Universiteit doet onderzoek naar duurzame oplossingen in landbouw en veeteelt.

The wildest stories are circulating about AI: smart computers are said to be taking a quarter of our jobs and there is speculation about 'self-aware' AI. Experts - including Elon Musk - are calling for six months of reflection. How useful is that? Haroon Sheikh debunks hypes and sci-fi scenarios and discusses how we can meaningfully integrate AI into our lives. What opportunities does this technology offer and what can be threatening? Prof Haroon Sheikh is a philosopher, writer and associate professor of Strategic Governance of Global Technologies (VU). He collaborated on Opgave AI for the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy.
Complotdenkers zijn van alle tijden: Stef Aupers
Heksen die de liefde met de duivel bedreven. Een geheime elite die corona gebruikte om de wereld te onderwerpen. Vaccinaties tegen baarmoederhalskanker die eigenlijk bedoeld zijn om vrouwen onvruchtbaar te maken… Complotdenken is van alle tijden. Waarom geloven mensen in de meest bizarre samenzweringen? Vertrouwen complotdenkers vaker op hun gevoel dan op rationele overwegingen en zijn zij politiek vaker extreem links of rechts? Prof.dr. Stef Aupers is cultuursocioloog en hoogleraar Mediastudies aan de KU Leuven.
De gewelddadige kant van vrede: Jaap de Wilde
Tijdens de Nationale Vredesweek staat Jaap de Wilde stil bij het begrip vrede. Hij maakt duidelijk dat vrede betekenisloos is zonder haar tegenpool oorlog. Pogingen om vrede los van een oorlogssituatie te definiëren lopen daarom op niets uit. De Wilde laat aan de hand van diverse Europese, Amerikaanse en VN-voorbeelden zien dat vrede en oorlog onlosmakelijk met elkaar zijn verbonden. Het begrip vrede is daarom altijd politiek beladen en controversieel; pas dus op voor vrede! Prof.dr.
