Master assignments stream 2: Literature Review

Understanding Eco Grief: A scoping or systematic review supported by Machine Learning

Method Stream: Literature Review

ECs: Only 14 EC (standard, no or limited own data collection. Applicable in case of a clinical internship)

Description:

Climate Change is one of the biggest threats to societies worldwide. The impact on mental health is still being studied, with a larger focus on eco-anxiety. However, other terms have appeared in the research and literature that are still underexplored, such as eco-grief, Ecological Grief, or Solastalgia. This type of grief is typically experienced due to a combination of tangible loss (such as the disappearance of a species or ecosystem), intangible loss, and anticipatory grief for future loss (Varutti, 2024).

In this study, you will conduct a scoping or systematic review to determine the current knowledge related to Eco Grief. For this purpose, you will also use innovative tools such as ASReview, developed by the Innovation Lab at Utrecht University. This tool is based on Machine Learning, and it will help you conduct a more efficient and objective search,

The results of this study will help to expand the knowledge of what eco-grief is and what further steps could be taken to help people who suffer from it.
