Bachelor assignments theme 1: Technological interventions in increasing well-being

Development and testing of an eHealth intervention based on Cognitive Bias Modification

Theme: Technological interventions in increasing well-being

Type of research: Qualitative empirical

Description:

The aim of this assignment is to develop and test the usability of an eHealth app based on Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) that helps individuals to reduce negative cognitions through repeated training of retrieval of positive memories. CBM yields positive effects on stress-related mental health in experimental studies, but implementation of CBM in mental healthcare lacks behind. One major hurdle is the translation of CBM to daily life processes. Experience sampling methodology (ESM), a structured diary technique, can bridge this gap. In this assignment, you will develop an ESM-based CBM app using the Twente Interaction and Intervention Machine (TIIM) by means of co-creation with to-be-determined target groups. Additionally, you will test this app on its usability and investigate its potential efficacy to reduce negative stress-reactivity, negative cognitive bias, and stress-related mental health problems. By the end of this project, we aim to have an operational ESM-based CBM-app that can be used in further research.

Example research questions include:

What are the requirements of potential end-users (e.g. students with stress, people with depression) of the CBM-app? And what are points of improvement of the content and design of a first version of the app?
