Are you the first in your family, or even your wider family, to go to university? Often, everything is newer and less familiar than it is for those following in the footsteps of their parents, brothers or sisters. University is new not just for you, but for your family too. As a result, there is sometimes less understanding within the family circle for the activities you wish to pursue as a student alongside your studies.
ACTIVITIES ALONGSIDE YOUR STUDIES
It is precisely these activities – such as attending conferences, going on study trips, joining activities organised by various societies, or even serving on committees and boards of academic or sports societies – that are important for your (personal) development. If you are a first-generation student and face financial barriers to participating in such activities, you can apply to this fund.
THE FIRST-GENERATION FUND CAN HELP!
The First-Generation Fund was established by alumni and associates of the University of Twente to provide financial support to students like you, so that you can hopefully still take part in activities you consider important for your development! Grants of up to €500 are available per application.
WHO IS THIS FUND FOR?
- For UT students or UT PhD candidates who are the first in their family to study at a university.
WHEN ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR THE FUND?
- The activities must be outside the regular curriculum (they may complement the curriculum, but may also be entirely separate from it).
- The activity must involve intellectual or social enrichment;
- Grade transcripts or academic progress are not the deciding factors
- We would like to receive a well-reasoned personal statement (explaining why you wish to undertake this and why an application to the fund is necessary), a budget and a recommendation from a lecturer or academic advisor.
Conditions
- A student may receive a maximum of one grant per fund per academic year.
- No more than one grant from the University Fund may be awarded for the same activity.
- The application must be submitted in good time (at least 2 months) before the start of the activity or the purchase of the equipment.
- Following assessment of the application, the board’s decision will be communicated to the applicant. No correspondence will be entered into regarding this decision.
