Scope of the meeting

The Physics of X-Ray and Neutron Multilayer Structures 2016 workshop, in short PXRNMS 2016, will take place on 10-11 November 2016 on the campus of the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands.

Nanometer-scale multilayer films optimized for their optical properties are key components in optical systems in the EUV, XUV and X-ray wavelength region, both in scientific and in industrial applications. They can be used in optical schemes for reflection, imaging, monochromatization, phase retardation, beam splitting, shaping of ultra short pulses, and many other applications.

Many of these applications, like EUV lithography, X-ray astronomy, synchrotron and FEL beam line optics, require the highest grade of perfection of the multilayer structures, not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of lifetime.

Another application of these multilayer structures with similar dimensions is neutron optics, for which, since neutrons have similar wavelengths as X-rays, basically the same design principles and material issues are involved.

Many conferences on this type of optics focus on the applications of the multilayers, but to develop these multilayers, detailed knowledge of X-ray optical properties of materials, as well as Material Science, Solid State Physics and Surface Physics is absolutely required.

Therefore, with our workshop we want to focus more on the physics of the structures, how they can be synthesized, as well as how they can be made radiation resistant to enhance the lifetime. All this will eventually lead to a better performance. But of course exciting new applications can also be discussed.

Until 2010 there was the bi-yearly Physics of X-Ray Multilayer Structures Conference bringing together researchers from around the world. With our workshop we aim to fill the omission that occurred after that conference ceased to be held.

Therefor we gladly invite PhD and Master students, young researchers and senior scientists, both from academia and industry to attend our workshop and present their work on EUV, X-ray and Neutron Multilayer Structures.

The workshop will take two full days. There will be some invited talks, and many slots for presentations as well as posters. To submit your abstract and/or register for the workshop, please use the buttons on the left hand side.
