Publication in Journal of Cleaner Production

On February 7th 2018 our article on the effect of permanganate addition on current efficiency during chlorate production was accepted for publication in the Journal of Cleaner Production. It explores the electrochemical selectivity caused by adding permanganate to a highly saline solution: without an additive, the oxychloric intermediates and product are back-reacted, but with permanganate only H2 is formed instead. This is directly relevant to chlorate production, one of the biggest industrial applications of electrochemistry, where such selectivity is currently achieved using highly toxic chromium. Another process that may benefit from electrochemical selectivity is photocatalytic water splitting.

This work is the result of a fruitful collaboration, involving our PCS group, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and AkoNobel Pulp & Performance Chemicals. We have greatly enjoyed worked together with them, and we very much hope to continue doing so in the future!
