Recent years have seen substantial progress in our understanding of the physical principles of electrowetting. The highlight article “Fundamental challenges in electrowetting: from equilibrium shapes to contact angle saturation and drop dynamics” by Frieder Mugele that appeared on September 1st in Soft Matter reviews some of these developments and explains how this recent progress provides new insights into the phenomenon of contact angle saturation, the practically and fundamentally most important problem in electrowetting. The article also briefly addresses current challenges in electrowetting research, such as the modeling of drop motion and the generation of internal flow fields.
