The educational initiative CLEAR: Chemistry Learning for Environmental Action and Responsibility, developed within the Chemical Science & Engineering programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) at the University of Twente, has been nominated for the Dutch Higher Education Award 2025 (Nederlandse Onderwijspremie). CLEAR is among the top 3 – a remarkable achievement and a valuable recognition of the quality of education at our faculty.
CLEAR integrates systems thinking throughout the curriculum, enabling students not only to acquire chemical knowledge but also to understand and address sustainability challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and greenwashing, within broader environmental, social, and economic contexts. This approach fosters an interdisciplinary and proactive mindset in students and has already received international attention.
The winners will be announced on 1 July 2025, during the annual Comenius Festival. At this event, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW) awards financial prizes to educational teams in secondary vocational education (MBO), universities of applied sciences (HBO), and research universities (WO) that have achieved outstanding educational innovations. The Dutch Higher Education Award aims to recognise and reward outstanding and innovative teaching initiatives.
