The 40th European Membrane Society (EMS) Summer School will be held at the green campus of the Twente University in the period Sunday 6 - Friday 1 July 2025. The Summer School is organised by the Department of Membrane Science and Technology.
Theme of the Summer School is
‘From Basic Principles towards Industrial Membrane Applications’.
We envision a highly interactive program that connects the fundamentals of membrane science and technology with real-world industrial applications, while also focusing on essential life skills to support participants’ personal and professional growth.
The program includes five sessions, each focusing on current and future global challenges—such as access to clean water, energy demands, and healthcare—where membrane technology can make a significant impact. Each session highlights a specific area of membrane research or application in which the team at Twente University is actively engaged. The sessions will feature direct links with industry, particularly membrane companies and membrane end-users, ensuring a strong connection between academic research and real-world applications.
Each session consists of three lectures that are structured in the same way:
- Fundamentals: mass transport, mechanisms, limitations, characterization methods, etc.
- Membranes: materials, properties, formation techniques, type of membranes, configuration.
- In industry: industrial applications with emphasis on the implementation process.
Besides the various internal speakers from our University, we have invited several interesting speakers from other academia and industry who are closely connected to our department. To illustrate the process of translating a concept into a commercial application, we have organized visits to large and succesful spin-off companies in the region.
