Background
Leon WMM Terstappen received his Medical Degree from the University of Groningen in 1983. From 1983 - 1987 he worked at the department of Internal Medicine in Ziekenhuis Ziekenzorg, Enschede and at the department of Applied Physics of Twente University from which he received his PhD in 1987. Following his PhD he worked on characterization of hematopoiesis as a post doctoral fellow and various research positions at the research institute of Becton Dickinson, San Jose, CA, USA. In 1994 he joined Immunicon Corporation a biotechnology start-up company in Huntingdon Valley, PA, USA to pioneer the detection of tumor cells in blood of cancer patients. As Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of Research and Development he was responsible for the development of the US Food and Drug Administration cleared CellSearch assay and was instrumental in the public offering (NASDAQ) of the company in 2004. In 2007 he was appointed as professor of Medical Cell Biophysics of the University of Twente initially on a part time basis and after acquisition of the assets from Immunicon by Veridex LLC a Johnson & Johnson company in 2008 he completed his transition to the University of Twente.
Teaching
Dr. Terstappen teaches the Master course Microscopic Detection for Technical Medicine at the University of Twente.
