Anke Lenferink in the running for the TOPX Females to Follow Awards 2024 – Rising Stars in Science

Anke Lenferink, Assistant Professor and Clinical Epidemiologist at Health Technology and Services Research (HTSR) within the Faculty of BMS (TechMed Centre), has been nominated for the TOPX Females to Follow Award 2024. Among 10 female researchers from the Netherlands and Belgium, she is in contention for the title of Rising Star in Science.

Lenferink obtained a joint Doctor degree as part of a Cotutelle agreement, a doctoral program she undertook jointly at the UT, Medisch Spectrum Twente, and Flinders University Australia. Lenferink is passionate about optimising self-management interventions to promote healthy behaviour and manage the increasing number of patients with chronic diseases. Lenferink conducts research on developing and evaluating patient-centred self-management interventions for chronic conditions, enabling treatment of a person, not the disease(s). For example, Lenferink successfully co-applied for a European Union Horizon2020 RE-SAMPLE project, a collaboration between 10 European partners to predict exacerbations to start early self-management and treatment for patients with complex chronic conditions. As clinical coordinator of RE-SAMPLE, Lenferink coordinates the collaboration between three European hospitals. Furthermore, Lenferink is one of the leaders of the interdepartmental ‘Technology in Healthcare Transformations’ (THT) research group at the UT, aiming to make technology-driven changes in healthcare transformations efficient, effective and sustainable.

Lenferink translates her research experience, knowledge and skills into teaching in epidemiology and clinical research methods, and in co-supervision of PhD students and supervision of Master and Bachelor students. Furthermore, she is the guest advisor for an article collection on personalised COPD self-management interventions. Lenferink has already awarded several prizes for her research, including the American Thoracic Society International Trainee Scholarship Award, a Lung Foundation Australia-Cochrane Airways Australia Scholarship, and the Stichting Astmabestrijding Best Paper Award.
