Consultation session: CO2 pricing and compensation proposal for UT business flights

  • What: CO2 pricing and compensation proposal consultation session
  • When: 29 june 2022, 12:15 - 13:30
  • Where: Waaier 2
  • Who: This event is open for all UT employees and students.

About the session

Climate science is clear: worldwide CO2 emissions have to reduce rapidly. To achieve this, many things will have to change. This includes the way we travel at the University of Twente: in 2019 (pre-corona), business flights accounted for around 13% of our emissions.

Three UT scientists - prof. Frieder Mugele, prof. Maarten van Aalst and prof. Jurriaan Schmitz - and environment and sustainability policy officer Brechje Marechal from the UT's SEE Programme will present the necessity, the possibility and the options for reducing UT’s emissions from flights.

Proposal

The aims of the proposal are to implement a CO2 pricing and compensation mechanism in order to:

  • generate incentives to reduce air travel of UT staff and students
  • generate revenues to subsize compensation and mitigation measures on campus (and/or by selected compensation organizations)
  • ensure compliance with the legal obligations imposed by the Dutch Climate Law for 2030

You are invited to join us in Waaier 2 to discuss and vote on scenarios and options for this pricing mechanism. We aim to consult with the UT community to get your input on this proposal, as well as hear your opinions on how the raised funds should contribute to CO2 compensation.
