Climate Colloquium: can we innovate ourselves out of climate change? with Heleen de Coninck

Climate Colloquium

The Climate Centre of the University of Twente is pleased to launch a new, inspirational lecture series: the Climate Colloquia. In this series, renowned scientists, innovators, and changemakers will inspire you with presentations of their work on combatting climate change through transdisciplinary solutions. After each lecture, there is time for discussion and meetings with fellow scientists, teachers and students, and to create connections across the boundaries of our faculties – and beyond our university.

  • What: Climate Colloquium with prof. Heleen de Coninck (TU/e): Can we innovate ourselves out of climate change?
  • When: Wednesday 15 May, 15:30-17:30
  • Where: Atrium, Langezijds/ITC

CAN WE INNOVATE OURSELVES OUT OF CLIMATE CHANGE?

At technical universities, many feel that technology is our only hope to address societal problems such as climate change. Engineers work hard on improving technologies, and this has brought many benefits. But we also know that technological innovation has downsides. Some technologies to address climate change can even make the problem worse, cause new problems or worsen existing ones. Also, technology cannot be seen in isolation: it is deeply connected with social innovation and people. In this talk, what IPCC and other research says about a new relationship with technological innovation is discussed.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: HELEEN DE CONINCK

Heleen de Coninck is a full Professor of Socio-Technical Innovation and Climate Change at Eindhoven University of Technology since 2020, and a Professor in Climate change and system transitions at the Raboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen's Faculty of Science. As a researcher, Heleen’s main research focus is on the role of innovation and technology in the international climate negotiations, on policy for making energy-intensive industry climate-neutral, and on the viability and societal dynamics of new technologies for 1.5C-mitigation pathways.

Heleen was a Coordinating Lead Author in the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C and in the mitigation part of the AR6. She was part of the IPCC Working Group III Technical Support Unit during the AR4 cycle, where she coordinated the IPCC Special Report on CCS. She was also a Lead Author in the climate mitigation part of AR5 (2014). Amongst other ancillary activities, she is currently the vice-chair of the Netherlands Scientific Climate Council.
