University of Twente's technology programmes increasingly popular

A significant increase in the amount of students who choose a technology programme and a strong increase in the amount of international students: in a nutshell, the development of University of Twente's student population.

These are some of the most eye catching figures in the 1cHO education database that was published on 30 January. In the 2016-2017 educational year, University of Twente welcomed 1,963 new Bachelor's programme students and 1,127 new Master's programme students. The increase of Bachelor's student enrolments compared to the previous year is higher than the national average; 22.8 percent versus 7.8 percent. In the Master's programme, the increase was 2.0 percent nationally and 17.2 percent at UT.

Technology Sector

The main factor in University of Twente's growth is the increase of the amount of students opting for a study programme in the Technology sector. The amount of students who opted for a technology Bachelor's programme increased by 2.5 percent nation-wide. At University of Twente, this increased by 7.5 percent. A similar trend is visible for the Master's programmes; this includes a significant increase in the study programmes in the Behaviour and Society sector that is primarily attributable to the major increase in the Psychology programme.

Victor van der Chijs, president of the Executive Board of the University of Twente:  “The demand for technically-trained graduates is growing. Not only within the technology sector, but also in other sectors, such as in healthcare. The enrolment increase for technical studies shows that students also recognise and appreciate the opportunities that arise.”

International classroom

The influx of international students increased by 73.5 percent. The majority of this can be attributed to the international influx of the Bachelor's programme. In the past summer, the number of Bachelor's programmes taught in English increased by another six programmes.

The University of Twente stimulates the increase of international enrolment and would like to be a university where the content and form of education takes place in an international context with a mixed international population of students and employees. Victor van der Chijs: “This corresponds with the work field of future graduates, which will have a completely international focus. Knowledge is developed in and for an international context together with international partners and focused on major societal challenges.”

About 1cHO

The education database 1cijferHO is the source file for all figures regarding education and students and is available in January every year. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, DUO, HBO-Raad and VSNU work together in this; making figures on enrolment, registered students, and degrees available. Based on these figures, results, study duration and drop-out rate can be calculated.
