HUMANITAIR CAFE

Humanitarian Cafe 2

Let's talk about the goals and bottlenecks that NGO's want to bring to the Climate Change Conference and the impact of climate change on the most affected countries.

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) will take place in about a month (30th of November – 12th of December). The goal of these conferences is to review progress made by members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to limit global warming and its consequences. The UNFCCC is an agreement between 197 countries of the United Nations. The agreement is to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human-induced) interference with the climate system.

During this Humanitair Cafe prior to the Climate Change Conference, organized by the Red Cross and KUNO, we want to address the goals and bottlenecks that NGO’s want to bring to the COP. During this event we want to talk about questions like: What are your priorities? What can we do together? And what message do we want to bring across?

Speakers

These statements will be followed by an open discussion with all participants facilitated by Klaartje Docters van Leeuwen (Red Cross), under Chatham House Rule.

After that there will be plenty of time for drinks, bites and networking.

This edition of the Humanitair Cafe is brought to you by Red Cross and KUNO.

Time: October 26, 2023

Urban climate change adaptation cycleshop

We all know how climate change is impacting our urban environment. It is time to start implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures! Cycle with us through the city of Enschede to understand green urban infrastructure measures that help to enhance biodiversity, deal with urban heat islands, water shortage and flood risks. Koen Wagelaar, expert in green urban infrastructure from the municipality of Enschede, will guide us and explain the details of the implemented measures and explain why they are critical for the city. Future challenges in Enschede and the Netherlands will be the topic of discussion. The tour will also pass by a district that was destroyed by a huge explosion of a fireworks factory in the city in the year 2000. The area has been completely rebuilt and the reconstruction process and design can be an inspiration for other disaster contexts. At the end of the cycleshop we will have an open discussion where we reflect on the measures you have seen. Do you see possible alternatives for the city of Enschede and do you see opportunities for your own hometown? We start at the University (ITC, Faculty of Geo-information and Earth-Observation) where you will be provided with a bicycle. For this “cycleshop” you need to be able to cycle. During the workshop you will be provided with a lunch.

Time: Friday, 03 November : 10:00 – 14:00

It will begin with project presentations on topics such as group privacy in disaster response and regulatory measures to uphold the core principles of humanitarian action, followed by lunch, and concluding with an interactive session on identifying potential harms when using drone technologies for disaster response.

Women in Disaster Resilience Round Table café

In the face of disaster, women are not just victims; they are instrumental agents of change and strength. They play a crucial role in disaster resilience by contributing their unique skills, knowledge, and leadership. They often serve as caregivers, community organizers, and first responders, helping to protect and support vulnerable populations during and after disasters. Their involvement in decision-making processes, disaster preparedness, and response efforts is essential for building more resilient communities.

Let's have a round table discussion about the "Empowering Women in Disaster Resilience: Roles and Challenges" and the issues they confront.

Location: ITC Langezijds building, Hallenweg 8, 7522 NH Enschede (room LA-2409)

Time: Friday, 03 November: 09.00-10.00

Costs: free, but please register if you are planning to attend

Risk & Resilience Festival

The Risk & Resilience Festival 2023 will take place on Thursday 9 November. This seventh edition is all about the innovative thinking of the participants. In an interactive setting you will work with others on one of the major social challenges of the Netherlands. No sound is too crazy, let's hear it!

Everyone wants sustainable energy, but nobody wants to be left out in the cold in winter because there is not enough wind or sun production. This is the dilemma of many of our social challenges. They are urgent, but must also be implemented carefully. Whether it concerns energy, housing or climate resilience: developing the right technologies is one thing, ensuring that the process is socially responsible is another. One of the major challenges of transitions is to keep everyone on board and, above all, to make the transition not just for the national government and large organisations.

First Climate Colloquium with Debra Roberts

The Climate Centre of the University of Twente is pleased to launch a new, inspirational lecture series: the Climate Colloquia. In this series, renowned scientists, innovators, and changemakers will inspire you with presentations of their work on combatting climate change through transdisciplinary solutions. After each lecture, there is time for discussion and meetings with fellow scientists, teachers and students, and to create connections across the boundaries of our faculties – and beyond our university.

We are excited to announce that the first Climate Colloquium will be given by prof. Debra Roberts, titled: Everything you need to know about climate change – latest findings from the IPCC.

In this talk, prof. Roberts will highlight the key findings contained in the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Synthesis Report for the Sixth Assessment Cycle. She will outline what is required to achieve Climate Resilient Development and a more equitable and sustainable world. She will also critically examine the large gaps between ambition and implementation: what we are doing, and what we should be doing? And what might this mean for our future? The talk will be concluded with a Q&A.
