The deposition of cobalt on copper in a wet medium

Interview June 2004

Frank van Dijk

The deposition of cobalt on copper in a wet medium as opposed to Ronald van Moere, who conducted his experiments in a UHV environment. In my case cobalt is electrochemically deposited on copper in a solution of distilled water, cobalt and a bit of hydrochloric acid. Cobalt is chosen because of its magnetic properties. If cobalt could be deposited on copper in a wet environment, the process would in theory be cheaper and could be executed on a much larger scale. STM in a wet environment was used to study the morphology evolution.

What is your thesis about?

Was your research purely fundamental?

Well, yes and no. My project’s aim was to understand more about the deposition of cobalt on copper, with possible spin off for industry.

Did you collaborate with other groups?

Yes, there are some groups in Germany working in the same field and we particularly collaborated with a research group in Bonn.

What would you like to do after your promotion?

I would like a job in R&D and to continue in this line of research, but obviously those kind of jobs do not grow on trees.
