Other options with(in) MSc EE programme

Other options during your MSc programme

  • It is possible to combine two specialisations in your degree programme. Both specialisations will be mentioned on your diploma. The study load of your course programme, the internship and the master's thesis will be the same as in case of a single specialisation programme. The requirements for graduating with two specialisations are the following:

    1. Your course programme must satisfy the requirements of both specialisations.
    2. Both chairs of your specialisations should be involved with a combined master’s thesis project that they have approved before the start of the project.

    Procedure for the approval of the course programmes

    Please fill in two forms for your course programme: one for each specialisation. Have both forms signed by the corresponding programme mentor and submit them to the education office. Of course, you should discuss your plans for combining the two specialisations with both programme mentors. The courses on both forms will be the same, but the order in which they appear may be different: a compulsory course on one form may be an elective on the other one. See the section about "Roadmap" for more information about the general procedure.

    Procedure for the master’s thesis project

    One of the groups of your specialisation will contribute the chair of the graduation committee. The other group will contribute the second examiner as described in the “Description of the master’s thesis”. Both should approve the project description in the Mobility Online system before the start of the project. See the “Roadmap master’s thesis” for more information about the registration procedure.

  • It is possible to combine an Electrical Engineering master’s programme with a second master’s programme. The result is a double degree programme, also called a combined programme. The idea of a double degree programme is that you complete two master’s programmes during the same period. Because some overlap is assumed between the learning outcomes of both programmes, some reductions on the study load can be obtained by combining them.

    These reductions are the following (this is the text of Article 3.6 of part A of the Teaching and Examination Rules of the EEMCS faculty).

    1. A student can obtain diplomas for two UT Master’s degree programmes on the basis of a combined programme.
    2. Students need to be admitted and enrolled in both degree programmes in order to combine two programmes.
    3. Approval for the programme and overlap in courses is required from the Examination Boards of both Master’s degree programmes.
    4. The following requirements apply to the composition of a combined programme:
      a. The programme of courses represents an amalgamation of the separate degree programmes and satisfies the requirements of each individual degree programme, including the programme intended learning outcomes. The minimum size of the combined programme in EC, 𝐸𝐶𝑃𝐶 , is expressed as: ECPC = ECP1 + 0.5 ∑ ECPi n i=2 where 𝐸𝐶𝑃1 corresponds to the ECs of the largest programme in EC, and 𝑛 is the total number of programmes the student combines.
      b. The combined programme must include two separate Master’s final projects, or one larger combined Master’s final project.
      c. Two separate Master’s final projects may only be combined into one larger one, if the topic is relevant and suitable to both Master’s programmes. The minimum study load of a combined Master’s Final Project (MFP) in EC, 𝐸𝐶𝑀𝐹𝑃𝐶 , is: 𝐸𝐶𝑀𝐹𝑃𝐶 = 𝐸𝐶𝑀𝐹𝑃𝑃1 + 0.5 ∑ 𝐸𝐶𝑀𝐹𝑃𝑃𝑖 𝑛 𝑖=2 where 𝐸𝐶𝑀𝐹𝑃𝑃1 is the number of ECs of the largest MFP in EC, where here 𝑃1 could be a programme that is not the largest in study load. (Footnote: For some EEMCS programmes graduation is divided into a 10EC preparatory study unit and 30EC thesis project. For the purpose of this rule A3.6.4d only, they are considered one single 40EC project.)
      d. In case there is a Standard Programme for a combined study programme defined by two UT Master’s degree programmes, the requirements laid down in the Standard Programme apply.
      e. The requirements on examiners and supervision for the internship and Master’s final project of both programmes must be met.
    5. 5. Students who complete a programme as described take a combined final examination which they pass if the assessments included in their file would result in a pass for the final examination of both degree programmes individually in accordance with the applicable regulations. The Examination Boards of the degree programmes involved decide whether a student passes the final examination. The degree programmes provide instructions concerning the date of a combined final colloquium.

    Passing the final assessment for a combined programme

    Students who complete a study programme as described above take a combined final assessment which they will pass if the assessments included in their file would result in a pass for the final assessment of both programmes individually in accordance with the applicable regulations. The Examination Boards of the programmes involved will decide whether a student will pass the final assessment. The Programme Board will provide instructions concerning the date of a combined final colloquium.

    Combining the EE master’s programme with a master’s programme from another faculty

    In case the other programme is from another faculty, this faculty may have other rules regarding the way both programmes are combined. In such a case a dedicated solution will have to be worked out for the individual student. The final decision, as always, will be taken by the examination boards, which both should approve the programme.

    Procedure for creating a combined programme

    Within the Electrical Engineering programme you will have to choose a specialisation. Each specialisation has a programme mentor who will be your mentor during the master’s programme. With him/her you can discuss the EE-part of your programme. The same way you can discuss the other programme with a programme mentor from the other study programme. Next you can discuss with these mentors how to combine the two programmes.

    Finally you create a request to both examination boards for approval of the combined programmes. Clearly explain the following points:

    • If your combines programme will contain a combined master thesis project and/or a combined internship.
    • Give separate course lists for both programmes and indicate which courses appear in both course lists.

    Before submiting your request to the EEMCS examination board, please send it to the programme coordinator for approval.

  • It is possible to compose a flexible degree programme. This means that the student assembles a master’s programme from elements from several programmes. The programme will have to be offered for approval to the Board of Examiners of the regular programme that is represented best in the proposal. Below, it is assumed that this regular programme will be in Electrical Engineering.

    Regulations regarding the flexible degree programme

    • It must be equivalent to a regular Electrical Engineering master's programme in terms of scope, breadth and depth;
    • It should contain clear goals and aims;
    • The deviation from any of the specialisations of the Electrical Engineering programme should be at least 30 ECs while still ensuring coherence in terms of content;
    • The level of the programme must match the objectives and programme intended learning outcomes that apply to the Electrical Engineering programme for which the student is enrolled.

    How to assemble a flexible degree programme

    First you should formulate for yourself ideas about your programme: which interests do you have, what should be the topic of our master’s thesis and which courses are relevant for you. Next you contact a full or associate professor in one of the EE or related groups who might have the expertise to supervise you during your study. This person will be your programme mentor and probably also will be the chairperson of your graduation committee. Below we call this person your programme mentor

    With this programme mentor you discuss the content of your programme: the topic of your master’s thesis and the courses that you will follow. You don’t need a specific description of the internship at this moment but its contents will have to correspond to the topics of your flexible degree programme.

    Procedure for application

    Please submit your application through the examination board's request form.

    The following documents are necessary:

    Attachment 1

    Request letter. This is the letter in which you describe and motivate your programme. Please indicate how your programme deviates from the existing EE-specialisations.

    Attachment 2

    Detailed study progress overview Osiris

    Attachment 3

    The registration form course programme. In case of a flexible degree programme this form should be signed by the chair of the graduation committee of your master's thesis.

    Attachment 4

    A description of the master’s thesis project. If you are already preparing you master’s thesis project, you  may use the registration form in the Mobility Online system. If you are still following your course programme, your programme mentor and you should write a provisional description of the master’s thesis project. The programme mentor must confirm agreement with this description.
