Pre-Master I-Tech

Some studies are directly admissible to the Interaction Technology master's programme, but other backgrounds require a pre-master in which you follow extra courses to bridge the knowledge gap. This page will help you find out whether you are in need of a pre-master and, if so, what you should do.

  • Studies that are directly admissible
    • Creative Technology (UT)
    • Business and IT (UT)
    • Computer Science (any University)
    • Kunstmatige Intelligentie/Artificial Intelligence (any University)
    • Electrical Engineering (UT, TU Delft, TU/e)
  • Studies that need a pre-master (University background)
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering that is different from the aforementioned studies
    • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline (e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Media Technology, Creative Technology, Design) that is different from the aforementioned studies

You can apply for the study and the Admission Committee will judge whether you can be admitted by checking your program and compiling a pre-master's programme consisting of courses in the following aspects (if you are lacking knowledge in those):

    • Research methodology
    • Programming
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Interaction design
    • Mathematics

In case there is too much discrepancy, no pre-master's programme can be compiled and admission is not possible.

  • Studies that need a pre-master (HBO)
    • A professional master's degree (HBO) in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
    • A professional master's degree (HBO) in a related discipline (e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Media Technology, Creative Technology, Design)

For students with a suitable HBO degree (Dutch university of professional education) in Computer Science or equivalent, a fixed premaster’s programme has been formulated. Students can also take this programme through kiesopmaat.nl as a transfer minor during their BSc programme. The admission committee may also offer this programme or a modified version to international students or students with a different background if the programme is suitable for them.

The premaster/transfer minor for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering students consists of Mathematics, Academic Research Skills, Intelligent Interaction Design, Physical Computing (for students with a Computer Science background) or Programming in Python (for students with an Electrical Engineering background).

The pre-master's programme starts two times a year: in September and in February. It has been formally separated from the master’s programme. The student will only be admitted to the master’s programme if all courses of the premaster’s programme have been finished with a sufficient examination result. The full premaster’s programme must have been finished successfully within a year after starting the premaster. If not, the student will be rejected for admission to the master’s programme. Note that you can only start with the master’s programme after you have completed the premaster’s programme and you have been admitted to the master’s programme. This is according to Dutch legislation (“harde knip”).

If, after reading this, you have any uncertainties about whether you will be able to study Interaction Technology with or without a pre-master, do not hesitate to contact the programme coordinator, Josca van Houwelingen-Snippe.
