1: Transformative education for sustainability (Zahar Koretsky, Anna Wieczorek, Lotte Roefs)
Part of the mission of an education organisation is to support society in addressing food, water, energy and climate crises, global inequality, biodiversity loss and other issues that collectively can be called societal challenges. In this mission, education organisations are positioned to train citizens of the future who possess a different skill sets, knowledge and attitudes than the citizens of the past and present. This will be a result of what is understood in literature as transformative education. Currently a wealth of approaches, guidelines and pedagogies aimed towards this goal are discussed in the literature, but there is little consensus on the specifics of transformative education and exactly what those skill sets, knowledge and attitudes should be, how to operationalise and implement them in education. The purpose of this conference track is to share and exchange work in progress on research and practice in transformative education for sustainability. All disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions are welcome irrespective of geography of the research, but we ask participants to preferably present higher-level lessons learned beyond reporting on individual case studies.
