Course information

Professionals are welcome to participate in courses from the master’s programmes of the Engineering Technology faculty, such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Sustainable Energy Technology as well as some other type of courses. Professionals join existing MSc courses without changes to the academic content, structure, or pace of the regular programme. This means you participate alongside full-time students, follow the same teaching methods, and complete the same assessments. Some flexibility may be offered depending on the nature of the course, such as alternative attendance options or individual assignment formats. Information about this is provided in each course description and varies per course.

Once enrolled, you receive full access to course materials, Canvas, and university systems. Upon completion, you receive either a participation certificate or—when assessments are completed—an ECTS certificate or a micro-credential. This model allows professionals to gain up-to-date academic knowledge, develop new skills, and learn directly within an active university learning environment, supported by clear guidance, structured registration, and professional administration.

The study load of an average master’s course is approximately 140 hours, with most (work)lectures taking place at the University of Twente. Professionals can enrol in full courses, supported by structured learning options and professional guidance. In addition, we provide advice on supplementary or related courses and programmes to help participants expand their knowledge and skills.

The academic year consists of four quarters. The first quarter starts in September, the second in early November, the third at the end of January or beginning of February, and the fourth in April. Each course is offered once per year during one of these quarters and takes about 10 weeks. The typical study workload for a master’s-level course is 5 European Credits (ECTS/EC). Under Dutch law, one EC represents 28 hours of study; therefore, a 5 EC course corresponds to approximately 140 hours of full-time study, which includes a combination of scheduled sessions, assignments, and self-study. Course fees are determined in advance and are based on the number of ECs. The cost per EC for the 2025–2026 academic year is €413.13; for example, a 5 EC course would cost €413.13 × 5 = €2,065.65.
